Here in the Southern U.S., we should all be familiar with the thistle, commonly referred to as a "sticker bush." However, the thistles that appear in many of our yards are run over by lawn-mowers before they become much more than a painful encounter for a bare foot.
There are some thistles that grow beyond this young stage of mower-destruction, though. We've seen them grow anywhere from a foot to a yard in height, resulting in a pinkish flowering something-or-other on top.
I didn't know until yesterday that artichokes are the flowering tops of a type of thistle. Now, I'm not recommending that y'all tromp out into one of your local pastures, lop the top off of one of these pretty pricklers, and head back into the kitchen to prepare some homegrown artichoke dip...because something is telling me this wouldn't work out very well.
But apparently, some specific genus of these things is edible.
Who'd've thunk?!
What's your favorite thing to drink when it's cold outside?
There are two things: first, spiced apple cider, which I haven't had in a really long time...and second, hot tea with honey and cream. My favorite is good black tea. Come to think of it, I haven't had a cup of hot tea in a long time, either. Now I have a craving.
If your Vox Neighborhood had a potluck dinner tonight, what dish, drink or dessert would you bring?
Dish: either my Cajun Cheese Grits casserole or that wickedly delicious Hash Brown Potato casserole...ya know, the one with all the cheese and the corn flakes on top.
Dessert: cheesecake!!!
Drink: Depends on what's for dinner and who's gonna be there. If it's tacos, all the fixins for margaritas. If it's Italian, a couple of bottles of Pinot Noir. If it's barbecue, BEER.
What is your favorite dish on the Thanksgiving table?
Submitted by Kadeeae.
That's a pretty tough one. Thanksgiving is our biggest family holiday, and the food, while always delicious, is the least of the enjoyment.
But I have to say that I have a serious love of sweet potato casserole...though I don't know why it's called "casserole" because it's essentially mashed sweet potatos topped with melty marshmallows. YUM.
But then there are green bean bundles...and wild rice casserole...and then there's dessert...
Damn. I'm hungry.
